Research and biotechnology

Background

I came to software through biotechnology rather than the other way around. That is unusual enough to be worth explaining, because it is the reason clinical data, regulatory constraints, and scientific method do not need translating for me.

BSc Biotechnology, Syracuse University, 2026 — 4.0 GPA, Dean’s list every semester, full academic scholarship, varsity men’s ice hockey.

2025Publication

GATA transcription factors in plant–pathogen interaction

Co-authored research published in Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, on the role of GATA transcription factors in plant defence response. My contribution was computational: the proprietary image analysis software the study relied on, plus gene expression analysis, statistical modelling, and figure preparation.

2024—Founded

iGEM Syracuse

A biotechnology organisation at Syracuse University run as a startup incubator, competing at the iGEM Grand Jamboree in Paris. As acting CTO and head of R&D I design the experiments, manage the lab teams, and built every digital tool the group uses. The current project is a spray-delivered extracellular vesicle system carrying interference molecules to a target organism — engineered to produce the effect of a modification without the organism qualifying as a GMO.

2024Industry

Medical Affairs, Pfizer

Research coordinator in Emerging Markets Medical Affairs, supporting clinical studies and their publications across 160+ countries. I built a self-updating research database wired into EndNote, and a pipeline that summarised thousands of papers into per-country clinical briefings used to match countries by epidemiological profile.

2023—Laboratory

Raina Lab, Syracuse University

Investigating epigenetic regulation of defence response to biotic and abiotic stress. SOURCE Grant recipient 2024–2025. Bench work across PCR, DNA extraction, southern blot, gel electrophoresis, and sequencing — alongside the analysis software that made the 2025 publication possible.

2023Clinical

Nova Scotia Health

Research volunteer in the QEII Hospital emergency department. Built and integrated REDCap to move patient data somewhere more secure, including a tool that converted and uploaded upwards of 10,000 records accurately in a single pass.

Why this matters for a software engagement

Most engineers meeting a clinical dataset for the first time have to be walked through what a protocol is, why a consent boundary is not negotiable, and what a research team actually needs from an export. That walk-through is billable time you would rather not pay for. If your project sits anywhere near a lab, a clinic, or a grant, that groundwork is already done.
